Welcome Folks
This site is meant to introduce everyone to perhaps the most unknown or perhaps forgotten fruit in history: the humble quince. There are presently so many outstanding sites that serve to remind and inform us about this fruit that I decided it best to do a brief collection of links.
Brief History
Quince or “Cydonia oblonga” derives its name from the ancient Greek city of Kydonia [Minoan era, around 3650 BC], in Crete. Homer refers to the Kydons (inhabitants of Kydonia) as one of the five Cretan tribes (The Odyssey 3,292 and 19,176). According to Greek legend, Kydonia was founded by Kydonas, the son of Hermes (or Apollo in other versions of the myth) and the nymph Akakalida, daughter of King Minos. According to Wikipedia, “The modern name originated in the 14th century as a plural of quoyn, via Old French cooin from Latin cotoneum malum / cydonium malum, ultimately from Greek κυδώνιον μῆλον, kydonion melon (Kydonian apple).”
